Chapter 1: Images Of God

Overview:

This chapter explores several images for God that are found in the Bible. God is like a shepherd, a potter shaping clay and like a loving mother or father.

Overview:

This chapter looks at the importance of loving families. It also tells the story of the marriage feast at Cana and the miracle Jesus worked there.

Chapter 3: Families - Sharing a Meal

Overview:

This chapter looks at the importance of family meals. It also notes the very special meal that Jesus had with his disciples before he died. We remember this meal when we go to Mass.

Chapter 4: The Church is a Family

Overview:

This chapter tells us that the Mass is a family gathering of the Church. At Mass, our celebration has many different elements, including readings, songs, bread and wine.

Chapter 5: Saints

Overview:

This chapter looks at the importance of saints in the life of the Church. These special people are great examples for us to follow.

Chapter 6: St Patrick

Overview:

This chapter tells us the story of St Patrick and describes the journey he embarked upon before becoming the great preacher to the people of Ireland.

Chapter 7: Ash Wednesday and Lent

Overview:

This chapter addresses Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. It links our Lenten journey to the fasting of Jesus in the desert.

Chapter 8: Holy Week

Overview:

This chapter tells us about Holy Week and the key elements of this sacred time. The celebrations of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday and Good Friday are key moments in the Christian calendar.

Chapter 9: Easter

Overview:

This chapter tells us about Easter Sunday and the first people who learnt about the raising of Jesus from the dead. Our Sunday mass celebrates this great event.

Chapter 10: Jesus, Light of the World

Overview:

This chapter explores the idea that Jesus is the light of the world. It locates this belief in the Easter Vigil, which celebrates his resurrection from the dead. At a Baptismal celebration, the symbol of light is very clearly linked to Jesus’ resurrection.

Chapter 11: God of Freedom

Overview:

This chapter is about Moses leading the Israelite people to freedom from slavery in Egypt. It tells of the plagues, the Passover meal and the escape through the Red Sea.

Chapter 12: Signs of God’s Love

Overview:

This chapter explores the many different signs of God’s love that we find in the world and are used in Catholic Sacraments. The everyday elements of bread, wine, water and oil are special signs of God’s presence among us.

Chapter 13: Welcome Home - The Prodigal Son

Overview:

This chapter tells the story of the young boy who asked his father for his inheritance and, after losing it all, came back to find a forgiving father.

Chapter 14: Welcome Home - Reconciliation

Overview:

The Sacrament of Reconciliation celebrates the forgiveness that the Father offers us. Like the Prodigal Son, we come seeking forgiveness, trusting in God’s merciful love.

Chapter 15: Feeding The Hungry

Overview:

This chapter is about Jesus’ compassion for the many people who were hungry. He not only taught them at great length but also fed them.

Chapter 16: The Eucharist

Overview:

This chapter tells us that the Eucharist is the special meal we celebrate in the Church. At Mass, we repeat the same actions of Jesus with bread and wine. Jesus becomes present in the holy bread and wine at Mass.

Chapter 17: Pentecost People

Overview:

Just as people have different gifts in life, the Church has been given gifts to share with the world. The apostles received the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and at Baptism we receive the same gift.

Chapter 18: The Wonder and Awe of Creation

Overview:

This chapter tells us that all of creation is a wonderful gift from God. We are called to see God’s hand at work in every element of creation and give thanks to God for these gifts.

Chapter 19: Sowing the Seeds

Overview:

This chapter tells us the parable of the sower, whose seeds fall on different types of soil. The good soil produces the best crop. We are called to be good soil for God’s word.

Chapter 20: The Poor Widow

Overview:

This chapter tells us Jesus’ story of the poor widow, who gave much from her the little she had. Jesus praises the love in people’s hearts, not the amount of money they give.

Chapter 21: The Good Samaritan

Overview:

This chapter presents Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan and his call for us to follow this example of care for our neighbour.

Chapter 22: Praying

Overview:

This chapter tells us that we can pray to the Father in many different ways. It presents Jesus as a person of great prayer who taught others how to pray.

Chapter 23: Jesus, Light Shining in the Darkness

Overview:

This chapter is about the season of Advent as a time of preparation for the birth of Jesus. His coming into the world was a great event for many people.

Chapter 24: Christmas: Jesus, A New Light

Overview:

This chapter tells us about the birth of Jesus and the people who came to visit the Holy Family at Bethlehem. The story of the Wise Men bringing their gifts is a famous Christmas event.
