Chapter 1: Our prayer place

Overview:

Jesus shows us through his life what justice means: we are called to live and act justly. God made us different from one another. These differences should encourage us to love and respect one another and to care for our Indigenous brothers and sisters.

Chapter 2: The Good Shepherd

Overview:

This chapter tells us that Jesus is our Good Shepherd who is always with us. A good shepherd protects his sheep day and night.

Chapter 3: Lost and Found

Overview:

This chapter further explores how a good shepherd cares for his flock. If one is lost, he searches until he finds the sheep and brings it back home.

Chapter 4: Jesus washes the disciples feet

Overview:

This chapter tells us that Jesus performed a servant’s task to teach his disciples an important lesson: he washed their feet. Although Peter was unhappy at first, he learnt that the true followers of Jesus wash each other’s feet.

Chapter 5: Take and Eat

Overview:

This chapter addresses how we prepare for a special meal. Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples and prayed a special blessing over the bread and wine. He then went out to prayer in the garden.

Chapter 6: Death to New Life

Overview:

This chapter presents the key days of Holy Week and then tells the story of how Jesus died and was raised from the dead.

Chapter 7: Jesus is Alive

Overview:

This chapter addresses the story of Jesus’ disciples, who met him after his resurrection. The sadness they felt when he died was replaced by the joy of seeing him by the lake.

Chapter 8: The Spirit Comes

Overview:

This chapter tells us that the Holy Spirit is in our lives, like a invisible wind, and is seen in kind actions and words. The Holy Spirit first came upon the disciples of Jesus in wind and fire.

Chapter 9: Our Wonderful World

Overview:

This chapter lists some of the wonderful things we can enjoy in God’s creation. We thank God for these great gifts.

Chapter 10: We Visit the Church

Overview:

This chapter tells us that Catholic churches are holy places for prayer. They have special things to assist our prayer and are good places for quiet reflection.

Chapter 11: Together at Mass

Overview:

This chapter tells us that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, has left us a celebration to remember him. The Mass has readings from the Bible and a special blessing, said by the priest, over bread and wine.

Chapter 12: Abraham and Sarah

Overview:

This chapter explores the story of Abraham and Sarah who listened to God’s message, left their homeland and settled in a new land. God promised that they would become the first parents of a great nation. They trusted in God, and his great promise came true.

Chapter 13: The Birth of Moses

Overview:

This chapter looks at the story of the People of Israel and the hardships they endured in Egypt. It tells us about Moses, who was saved from death as a baby by the clever planning of his mother and sister. Moses grew up to be a great leader.

Chapter 14: God Chooses David

Overview:

This chapter looks at the selection of David as the new king of his people. The prophet Samuel chose David from all his brothers, even though he was the youngest. God chooses special leaders for his people.

Chapter 15: David and Goliath

Overview:

The story of young David defeating the giant Goliath is a famous one. Goliath was challenging the Israelites, and David asked the king to let him fight. God was with David, and he defeated the giant and won the battle.

Chapter 16: Jesus’ Family

Overview:

This chapter looks at the early life of Jesus: his presentation in the Temple, his family life in Nazareth and his parents finding him in the Temple.

Chapter 17: Jesus calls his disciples

Overview:

This chapter tells us that Jesus called some fishermen to join his mission. They left their nets and immediately joined Jesus in preaching the Good News.

Chapter 18: The long wait

Overview:

This chapter briefly notes that the birth of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, was an event people had waited a long time for.

Chapter 19: Getting ready for Jesus

Overview:

This chapter tells us about the Annunciation to Mary by the angel Gabriel. Mary says yes to God’s plan for the world. She then visits her cousin Elizabeth, who was also expecting a special child.

Chapter 20: Jesus is born

Overview:

This chapter is about the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus. Angels sang and shepherds visited the newborn king.
