The following is provided as a 'jumping-off' point for teachers who may wish to explore the 11.1 Aboriginal 'Guthie Guthie'
imagry more in depth and develop activities around it.
The artist was kind enough tom provide a few words about his work and touch on the symbolism of the images.
The following is an explanation from the artist, Brian McKinnon, in his own words:
Before all the creatures and plants were made, the land and the water had to be
made. (D)Bunjil the Eagle, creator of the Kulin Nation with (C)Waa the crow,
his messenger, set about making the land.
The (A)rainbow serpent from Western Australia and the Northern Territory
creates the (B)waterways. But in The Kulin Nation it is the (E)Murray Cod that
creates them. These stories relate to the Guthie Guthie story, during the
Dream Time, the creation period. Before plants and animals there had to be
land and water.
Brian McKinnon is a Geelong based aboriginal artist originally from Western Australia.
